Nick Pron

Author, Crime Story

Nick Pron worked the crime beat for nearly three decades as a reporter at the Toronto Star newspaper, observing and reporting on the dark side of Canada’s largest city. He also covered over a hundred criminal trials, many of those murder cases. As the Selina Shen murder case progressed, Pron got close to the prime suspect, Rui-Wen Pan. When Pan was finally arrested, Pron visited him in the Don Jail. He reported on all three trials before Pan was finally convicted and sentenced to life. His and Donovan’s notes formed the basis for Crime Story. Pron also covered the Bernardo/Homolka murder trials on which he based his second book, Lethal Marriage. Pron followed police for years as they hunted in vain for a serial rapist in east end Toronto. It was only after Paul Bernardo moved to St. Catharines, with his wife Karla Homolka, and went on to murder three young girls that they were finally caught and convicted. After retiring from the Star, Pron did freelance writing for the Toronto Police Association, the union representing the Toronto police force. Today he’s a huge fan of the National Football League.
